Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Thursday wanted the Centre to allow States to decide on reservations basing on their own demographic composition.

Speaking at the India Today Conclave South 2018,” he said the concept of Cooperative Federalism should be translated into a reality by strengthening the States giving them a adequate powers and a fair share of funds.

Quoting the example of Telangana State where in the SCs, STs, BCs and Minorities form 90 per cent of the population, he said the 50 per cent reservation cap fixed by Supreme Court would not help ensuring a fair deal to the communities at the receiving end. So is the case with States like Jharkhand which had the STs with a predominant presence.

It is “high time” the expectation of the people were met. The Central Government must raise to the occasion. The reservations issue he said was neither controversial nor contentious. It is up to the Government of India to come forward and allow the States to go ahead with the reservations,” the chief minister said.

Telangana Legislature Passed a bill seeking increase in the reservations for Scheduled Tribes Muslims on the basis of their backwardness in government jobs and educational institutions.

Appreciating the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue of devolution of more funds to States, he said there is lot more to be done.

Modi has increased the tax devolution from 30 per cent to 44 per cent. On implementation of the concept of cooperative federalism, he said, there was a great deal to be done.

Rao said his government will be coming out with a new the “NRI Policy” soon. The NRIs from the Gulf countries, despite their long years of work in those countries, had to come back and settle in India.

They have been asking for certain concessions and support while getting them selves relocated in the State. The government is working on what could be done for them, he said.

On farmer suicides, he said Telangana State had launched several schemes to relieve them from the wretched conditions and block the paths to suicide.

A slew of measures were introduced and more in the offing to support them with crop investment assistance, minimum support price for their produce and round eth clock quality power. Read More News HYDERABAD WILL ALWAYS BE THE SECOND CAPITAL OF INDIA
